Meet Calgary's Walk Ambassadors, The Nadurak Family

Our names are Brad & Kelley Nadurak.  Our son Zachary (Zac) was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was approximately 18 months old.  That was in 2001 when Yann Lefebvre, a firefighter from Quebec was rollerblading across Canada to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. That was our first walk for Muscular Dystrophy and since then we try to go every year.  The last few years, circumstances have not allowed us to come but we are back.

We try to take part in as many Muscular Dystrophy events as possible for example Christmas parties and barbeques, etc.

The walk benefits my family by providing funds for equipment that we need.  Muscular dystrophy helped pay for the conversion of our van so we can transport Zac. Muscular Dystrophy also paid for the wall track in our house to get Zac in and out of his wheelchair and into his bed or into the tub.

I would like people to know that the walk mainly raises funds for equipment for  Muscular Dystrophy patients.  We could not have afforded the equipment we have received on our own.

Some memories of the walk are that it seemed to snow or rain every year. It always seemed to be cold but we walked anyway.

We fund raise by reaching out to friends and family. We usually get a great response.

We help spread awareness of the walk by word of mouth and on social media.  We usually post something on Facebook about when and where the walk is and invite everyone to come out and support us.

We look forward to catching up with other families that we don’t see very often.  It is nice to be with people that understand what you are going through.  Sometimes that is the only time we see them.

I would tell a first time participant to be ready to walk but to have fun.  It is always a great time. Great friendships are made at the Walk for Muscular Dystrophy.

Our team name this year as it is every year is Team Zac Attack.  We will be walking with family, friends, pets, caregivers and whoever else wants to join our team.

The Walk for Muscular Dystrophy is a fun time to get together with friends and family to raise money for a great cause.

In June, Zac graduated from high school.  We were so proud of watching him meet the principal at centre stage to receive his diploma. There was a great cheer amongst the students when they announced Zac’s name.
